inspired by a carpet page from the Book of Durrow. (Gospel manuscript
from the second half of the 7th century). The eagle is usually the
symbol of the Evangelist John, but in the Book of Durrow it symbolises
the Evangelist Mark (usually depicted by an image of a lion). The
design uses a variety of interlace which is thought to have anapotropiac
function because of its percieved ability to trap evil. Such pages
could have been intended to protect the holy text as they are found
at the beginning of each Gospel. |
